Great Ocean Road Celebration Tour Begins at the ACE
Monday 12 November 2007
The VACC's Great Ocean Road 75 Years Celebration Tour, a major event that will recreate the official opening, in 1932, of Victoria's world-famous tourist drive, will begin at the Automotive Centre of Excellence on Sunday 25 November 2007.
Built by returned World War I soldiers, the Great Ocean Road is the World's largest war memorial and was officially opened with a cavalcade of 40 vehicles, which motored from the Geelong Town Hall to the Grand Pacific Hotel in Lorne on November 26, 1932.
The VACC 75 Years Great Ocean Road Celebration Tour will be a four-day affair, taking in a much larger section of the Great Ocean Road.
Commencing Sunday, November 25, 2007 at the Automotive Centre of Excellence, Docklands, the cavalcade of pre-1933 or surviving cars from that history-making first drive will travel to Geelong before linking up with the Great Ocean road for the run to Portland.
As well as being the starting point for the Celebration Tour, the ACE will host carnival activities such as rides, roving performers and plenty of activities for the kids.
Kangan Batman TAFE CEO, Ray Griffiths, said ‘we are honoured that the VACC has chosen to begin its celebratory tour at what we hope will be another Victorian icon – the Automotive Centre of Excellence at Docklands.
'I invite anyone with a genuine interest in the latest in automotive training technology and sustainable design to come and see the Automotive Centre of Excellence on the day.
'With the historic vehicle tour, and a range of entertainment for young and old, this event is a perfect family fun day!'
Funds raised from the VACC 75 years Great Ocean Road Celebration Tour will go to Retina Australia Victoria, to help the charity's long-term plan to build and strengthen retinal dystrophy services in regional Victoria.
The Fox Classic Car Collection, which is adjacent to the Automotive Centre of Excellence, will also be open, with funds also going to Retina Australia Victoria.
