Leading in Lean
Tuesday 11 November 2008
Kangan Batman TAFE continues to lead the field in delivering Lean training by establishing a partnership with Automotive Supplier Excellence Australia (ASEA).
As part of ASEA's commitment to assist the local auto supply base achieve world-class competitiveness and sustainability, a team of lean specialists are working with several businesses to identify problem areas and implement lean strategies.
Kangan Batman TAFE staff members Joseph Patuto, Rainer Perl and Nick Viney have worked on the project over the past few months and have already made great inroads into addressing ASEA's overall project goals.
"The ASEA project is a national program supported by a wide range of industry and government bodies," Joe said."It has analysed and assessed more than 60 automotive suppliers across Australia and as part of the gap analysis discovered that many of those companies needed to implement improvement plans to remain globally competitive. The initial survey also found that over 50 percent of companies requiring assistance with improvements were within Victoria."
Three areas of improvement were identified – management and leadership; manufacturing and quality; and supply chain integration and management.
Kangan Batman TAFE's role in the project is to work on improving the delivery of manufacturing and quality.
"This involves visiting the nominated participating businesses and conducting on-site Lean evaluation against 19 key lean elements," Joe says.
"We also deliver a presentation to the senior management team of each company to make sure the information we're delivering goes right to the top, and that senior members actually support and assist the lean strategies we implement throughout a 12 to 16-week program."
On-site training is also carried out by the Institute's Centre for Competitive Operations team which works closely with ASEA coaches to ensure smooth delivery of the program.
Joe says the model is well accepted within the industry and gives Kangan Batman TAFE a clear indication of where Lean training and delivery can be further developed in line with industry expectations.
