Kangan Institute’s motorsport student Bonnie Beard has been appointed by Erebus Motorsport to one of the top two motorsport technician positions on Aaren Russell’s Holden Commodore.
Bonnie, who has been working between the Erebus Motorsport Ute and GT programs for the last 18 months, will be the number two technician on the team. She will join number one technician Frances Buckley, a move marking one of the first times that women have held the top two motorsport technician roles in V8 Supercar history.
“I believe it’s a good achievement as it was what I was working towards. I have enjoyed the GT program and working on the GT cars and it’s a shame I’m moving over, but it’s also a win in my books because I’m able to move across and learn a new car,” she said.
Bonnie, who is completing a Certificate III in Motorsport Technology and a light vehicle apprenticeship, said Kangan Institute’s training programs and industry partnerships provided her with the stepping stone into employment at Erebus.
“I started last year with my Certificate II in Motorsport Technology and then progressed onto the certificate III. My teacher Greg Moulden managed to get me a work placement at Sandown working on V8 Utes with Erebus. With a bit of initiative I got myself to Bathurst 1000 and completed my practical placement for the rest of the year at Erebus. At the end of 2015 I was offered an apprenticeship with Erebus Motorsport.”
The young technician also spoke highly of the training and learning facilities at Kangan Institute’s Automotive Centre of Excellence in Docklands.
“The facilities are so up to date and all the information is available to you – if it’s not on the computer, it’s on a book or the teacher can give you information. We also have cars in the classroom to work from, along with welding and panel and paint facilities.”
Training aside, Bonnie is keeping busy at the workshop and races, with her GT team emerging top ten at the Philip Island 101 in May. Her next race will be in Darwin on 17 to 19 June.
